Trophy mule deer in Nebraska
The importance of year around protein
The importance of year around protein has many advantages over baiting for various reasons. Number one is that when the weather gets bad the whole herd has a source of protein throughout the winter in the nastiest of cold and the deepest of snowfalls . Just putting bait out to attract the bucks in the fall so you can harvest is ok for the average hunter, but if your an outfitter you should be concerned about the whole health of the herd instead of just the bucks, and just in the fall. The does are your factories for all the future trophy bucks and should be closely monitored just as much as the bucks. The year around protein has produced more mass, bigger racks, and a lot better overall herd health to survive the harsh winters and be at maximum health if there ever is any sickness. Number two is that if you just bait for the fall then you are getting the deer in a pattern and when hunting season is over right when they really need the protein, it's gone. Bucks get run down very badly during the rut and need built back up to survive predators , the harsh winters, and also when the bucks drop their antlers it is very hard on them. Hopefully this helps with some of the questions I get on a daily basis. Good luck if your still hunting and stay safe.
