Management practices for mule deer
We here at Deer Meadows Outfitters pride ourselves in our management practices we have had in place for the last 20 years. Knowing the difference in age of the mule deer has always been something that has differences of opinion . Fact is ,harvesting management bucks and not just the trophy bucks is vital to the herd? Think about it, if you harvest all the trophy bucks and only leave the management or young bucks to cover your does, it won't be long before your mature bucks aren't trophy bucks anymore. There is a lot of difference in what a hunter defines as a trophy class buck also. We consider the age of the buck along with the files of years of data on the different bucks to determine at what age is peak for that buck. Some genetics will allow a buck to max out at 6 years of age and others will max out at the age of 4. Take into consideration the type of growing season the deer has along with other variables such as stress, competition for food, how hard the winter is,and deer densities. These all play a part in your deer herd health and in your potential to raise and harvest mature bucks. Best of luck hunting and always hunt safe and ethical.
