Hunting season in Nebraska
Mule deer ranges in the sandhills
There is a lot of difference of opinion on the amount of miles traveled by the mule deer in the sandhills of Nebraska. Yes, there are resident herds and bucks that always seem to be in the same area no matter when we go out to look for them. If there's one thing I've learned over the past 20 years is that when the bucks get to that magical year 4 of their age..... they travel, a lot. Some of the bucks we have on camera the prior year might hit the camera 7 or 8 miles from the previous spot. So you ask why manage so hard if your mature bucks are ranging that far? The answer is that the bucks also return to the original spot where they were captured on camera earlier. Not always do they all return but a good portion of the mature bucks do return. Yes you will loose some to other properties but if your fellow outfitters have the same guidelines in place then everyone benefits from your practices. The important thing is that the bucks are allowed to mature and that you need to leave a buck to cover your does that is exactly what you want your future bucks to look like. Working together is a lot easier than being enemies while your goal is the exact same thing. Working together, everyone benefits from nice trophy bucks, especially the hunter. Working together benefits everyone, and there is no such thing as free range deer trespassing. Hunt safe and hunt ethical!!!
